Is J-J-J-J-Jessie Gay?

Is J-J-J-J-Jessie Gay?

In today’s “look at this celebrity woman and judge her for her sexuality!” news, ombre-haired irritant Jessie J has been outed as “100% gay” in an unauthorised biography. Quite frankly, we’re more shocked and interested that the ‘unauthorised biography’ market continues to thrive. We thought the disappearance of 5ive and Boyzone was pretty much the last nail in that badly-edited, hardback, shiny coffin.
Anyway, where were we? Oh yes, apparently Jessie J is a lesbian, according to the biography’s author (can you call her a biographer if it’s unauthorised?) Chloe Govan, who has a lot to say about whether Jessie J does it with dudes:
“Jessie might have been with boys in the past - but she is 100 per cent gay. Jessie was openly lesbian and didn’t hide it.
“She was advised not to come out, though. Certain people thought being bi was trendy, exotic and a fashion statement. It would increase her allure.
"There are so many homophobes out and there were fears of a career-damaging backlash.”
Wow, Chloe, how ace of you to out her, then, if you believe that these homophobes might damage Jessie’s career! I’m sure that if she starts getting homophobic abuse, or those mad bus advert Christians come to her house and try to pray away the gay, she’ll just be all like “I am so glad Chloe Govan decided to out me so she could sell copies of a book about me, which I in no way endorsed!” What a good egg, eh?
If this is true, if Jessie J really has been bullied into hiding the sexuality she was previously comfortable with and open about, then that sucks because nobody should feel like they have to hide who they are. It also sucks that we live in a world where being bi is seen as a trendy fashion statement, and where we are constantly invited to scrutinise the sex lives of young people in the interests of entertainment.
Jessie J’s job is to be a pop star, wear catsuits and spin around in her chair. It’s not her job to tell us anything about her sexuality, and it’s not our business to ask. Gay or straight or bi, Jessie J doesn’t need to explain herself or what she does with her downstairs. So far she hasn’t commented, and maybe if she never does, it’ll be a big “screw you” to the speculators. Either way, and we know we’re sending mixed messages by writing a story about this, who cares?
