ARMCHAIR critics who doubted that young dendera musician Tryson Chimbetu’s time as the heir-apparent to the throne has come were left with second thoughts after the musician silenced them with a scintillating act at the Uhuru Concert in Harare.
The concert pitted some of the country’s finest musicians but the young prodigy sprung a big surprise that will remain etched in the minds of thousands of music lovers who were left clamouring for more.
“Dr Nero”, as he is called in entertainment circles after one of his late father’s songs, proved why he is riding high at the moment as evidenced by the way that massive crowd mobbed him and yelled for an encore after his act.
Some of the people who attended the gala could not help but go down memory lane to the days of the original Marxist Brothers when his late father Naison and uncle Simon were still playing together.
“Truth be told, Tryson has that original dendera flair which we used to enjoy during the days of the original Marxist Brothers,” one fan said.
Another fan said Tryson’s voice reminded them of the late Simon.
“The real dendera is the one where you take it easy. Haina pressure, you don’t sweat it out like sungura,” she said.
The way that Tryson’s Mercedes-Benz was mobbed by fans after his performance was reminiscent of a similar incident in which Simon’s car was also mobbed by excited fans at Gwanzura Stadium during the Jenaguru Music Festival several years ago.
It was a case of history repeating itself as Tryson proved that dendera music indeed runs in his genes.
Tryson has been toiling for years in an effort to build his name and started off as a mere curtain-raising for the likes of Alick Macheso, among others.
It was by clinging on Macheso’s music coat-tails that he gradually rose to become a force to reckon with in the “cut-throat” industry dominated by a phalanx of other gifted musicians.
But it his youthful age that has put him in good stead of becoming the dendera king of the future
